My Students
Social studies has always been my passion. Throughout my whole life, I have loved learning about distant and faraway lands. I have seen that students also love being taken to faraway places without leaving their seats.
My students are mainly ninth and tenth grade English language learners from Latin America and the Middle East.
Despite coming from all over the globe, they have arrived with very little knowledge of the lands that previously surrounded them. I am hoping to open them up to the world around them and in the process, make the world seem smaller and friendlier to them. My school is in a working-class community in Northern New Jersey.
I am also the coach of Academic Decathlon, composed of thirty-five students who compete against other schools in tests of knowledge, public speaking, and writing. We meet every Monday and Thursday for practice.
My Project
These books will prepare my students for Academic Decathlon next year. The book "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" is the official work of literature for the 2018-2019 Academic Decathlon season. This book deals with the exploits of two minor characters from Shakespeare's "Hamlet". The book is required reading for the Language and Literacy portion of the Academic Decathlon competition. Having copies of this book will allow my students to read the book on their own and truly master the reading necessary for the competition. As I look to build the High School Academic Decathlon program into a world-class organization, having world-class materials at my disposal is imperative.
