My Students

The number one complaint of my students is that the books we read in school are not interesting to them.

Some of them are reluctant readers, but most of them are former readers who have become disenchanted with reading because they simply haven't been exposed to or given the opportunity to read books that they are choosing for themselves, and that are INTERESTING TO THEM!

(Radical concept, yes?)

My Project

If you sponsor my project, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping get books that students have requested specifically to have in our classroom library. It has been powerful to see community building around common texts of their choosing. I have some of the titles already, but need more copies so that the dialogue between students can occur.

This is a wonderful time to be a young person, as there are SO MANY awesome books out there.

Yes, I believe that the "classics" have a place in our classroom curriculum, but I also believe that a love of reading can never be cultivated by shoving these books down students' throats. We need to give them opportunities to figure out what kinds of books they love, and as they build confidence and stamina as readers, they will be able to access Shakespeare and Steinbeck...in due time! :)
