My students range from kindergarten to 2nd grade. Learning to read should be fun and motivating! Some students need extra support to build the skills needed to become successful readers. Having books to read at home is not something that many students have access to. I am hoping this project will help me to make reading at home accessible to all. It is important that children are being read to at home, but as they learn to read it is just as important that they have books at their level to feel successful!
My Project
Literacy development is essential to success. Early literacy is the time to help children grow a strong foundation to build their reading skills. As a reading specialist, I see on a day to day basis how important it is for my students to have access to books at home. I have books handed down to me from family members, colleagues, garage sales, and books I have ordered with my own money. I am trying to grow a leveled library that provides a wide selection of books for students to borrow and read at home! My students' eyes light up when they see new books in our book bins and they are highly motivated to borrow books to read when they have a bigger selection. I am constantly trying to find books of high interest, quality, diversity, with a mix of nonfiction and fiction. I was lucky enough to grow up with access to books and I want my students to have the same opportunity so they can fall in love with reading!
