This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky to be the teacher of 8th grade diverse learners! I co-teach in 8th grade Reading and Math classes this year. My students are of Hispanic and African American descent and most speak two languages. The majority of our students come from low income households and lack the basic school supplies. They come to school every day determined to work hard and eager to learn!

My students have all been diagnosed with a learning disability.

Their greatest struggle is with reading fluency and reading comprehension. Every lesson is differentiated to make sure they can be successful and continue to make great progress in school. My students are amazing individuals who make my life better!

My Project

Now that we are back to learning in person Chicago I would like to use a novel to explore my unit in Language Arts on identity. As my eighth graders have been been isolated since March of 2020, the novel "House on Mango Street" reflects on a Mexican-American character and her life experiences that help her find her self identity.

I would like each of my students to have a paper back novel so they are able to annotate, and highlight as they read the vignettes in this novel.

My students have been doing an amazing job this year! Having their own novel to work from will enhance our unit and may increase comprehension and fluency as they read. Thank you for your support!
