Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom involves at least half of the students rotating to the class library to read for fun. I currently have 14 of my 24 students who cannot read at a second grade level and my biggest challenge that I face is making reading fun for them. A library will help with that!
My students are incredibly sweet, but at least half of them do not have parents that speak English at home.
Therefore, they are not getting to read very often at home. Our school is located in a small town that has mostly military and farming families. Our school does it's best to provide high expectations both academically and socially so that we can develop well-rounded, involved citizens. My students have big dreams of being police officers, doctors, teachers, and members of the military. I want to be able to put them on track to these goals, but first, I must teach them to read.
My Project
Children always have to read out of text books and the stories that we assign them, however they rarely get to read for fun. It is reading for fun that makes them love reading because they are transported to another world, a world they choose to be in. By having a library, I feel that they will learn to love reading and improve their reading skills at the same time. My students need a classroom library to promote literacy and reading for enjoyment.
Every student's life changes when they finally learn to ready fluently.
Everything becomes easier for them, including solving math word problems, reading directions, and especially the subject of reading and language arts. Using a class library they can not only become fluent readers, but also great spellers, writers, and speakers. Each of their lives will be enriched by this donation.
