I teach a much-needed reading intervention program within a high school. My students come from varied backgrounds and have a varied range of needs and abilities. Most of my students recognize that they're not where they need to be, concerning their reading ability, and many of these students are willing to do the work.
These students want to get better at reading.
We work on core skills that help them access the rest of their education. For some students, they only need one class, some will need more, but the goal is the same. For some of my students, they have never found a book that they actually wanted to read; for some students, they have always struggled so much that they have never read a book for fun. One of our goals is to find at least one book that they WANT to read.
My Project
My students are fortunate to go to a school where we (the staff) are committed to creating a culture of reading. This project seeks to provide more variety to students, particularly our male students, and to find books that students WANT to read!
By encouraging personal and independent reading, students not only develop their vocabulary but their writing fluency as well.
The more we expose our reluctant readers to new and diverse books, the better chance we have at helping them not only read a book, but potentially enjoy reading! The ultimate goal is to help students get better with their reading to increase their reading fluency and retention, which will help them access the rest of their education. Finding a book that they enjoy reading would be a bonus!
