My students are enthusiastic, curious, and driven! Our classroom strives to be equally as bright and inclusive for all learners. Michelle L. Graham wrote, “What greater joy can a teacher feel than to witness a child’s success?” I want to instill the love of learning in my students as we explore reading, writing, mathematics, science and with the Common Core curriculum at the center of it all.
My students are eager and hands-on learners who take pride in each other’s academic success!
For many of my students, kindergarten is their first year in a classroom environment. A majority of them also qualify for free/reduced lunch, are English Language Learners, and/or have Individualized Education Plans. That is why it is essential that they love learning as to set a precedent for the rest of their academic careers. We are learning how to become lifelong readers and writers through engaging lessons with support by books, guest speakers, realia, field trips, and technology.
My Project
Kindergarten has now become a pivotal grade-level, with extremely high reading and writing expectations. Currently, we have leveled books that children are uninterested in because they are outdated. For that reason, I am requesting these materials because my students need access to new books that will encourage and guide them through the reading process. We will use these leveled readers during our Independent Reading, Partner Reading, and Guided Reading Groups for Reader's Workshop. The books that I am requesting are popular and current books that promote engagement, real information, and fun! When students have access to books at their level they can practice decoding, take reading risks, and build confidence. These materials will help build our leveled book library in order to offer students variety and choice; an important component to creating a life-long avid reader!
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest and growth in independent reading since the beginning of the school year, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
