Help me give my students story books that focus on the speech sounds that they have difficulty producing. They can take these books home to practice their sounds outside of speech theray.
I am a Speech Pathologist in a rural WV community. This community is close knit and it’s residents have many struggles as most rural communities in America such as limited job opportunities and lack of resources. The children in this community have a deep love and affection for their school, teachers and all the staff, as do most parents. The feeling is mutual between teachers, staff and students.
As a Speech Pathologist, I work with students with communication disorders.
These children struggle to be understood by teachers and classmates who are unfamiliar with their speech patterns. This can lead to low self esteem, reading problems, and difficulty making their wants and needs known. They often struggle with conversational skills. Through Speech Therapy they learn to use speech sounds correctly, build vocabulary skills and become better communicators.
My Project
Many students are experiencing a different kind of learning this school year. With this project I can provide my speech therapy students with books that target their error sounds. They can use these books at home to practice their sounds. We can use these books during tele speech therapy to work on their targeted sounds. Parents will become more familiar with their child's speech sound errors and be able to help their child improve communication skills through interesting story books! Books are a valuable tool for children and parents to improve communication!
