Arthur Ashe said, "One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation." When I read this, I imagine the opportunities for my students to build self-confidence as readers and achieve success - if only they had the resources to adequately prepare!
My students specialize in dreaming big.
They know what their academic goals are and the hard work it will take to achieve those goals. They know that hard work and perseverance will lead them to be successful readers. They know that their teachers believe they can achieve their goals, goals which will ultimately lead them to college. What my students don't know is that they are already 2 to 3 years behind their peers in more affluent school districts. They don'ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt know that their school serves predominately low-income children, most of whom receive free or reduced lunch. They also are unaware that by not having access to quality books at home, they are already climbing a very steep ladder to success. As their teacher, I'm not worried about any of these challenges, because I know how determined they are to reach their goals. I know that their determination, not their life circumstances, will make them successful readers. Now they just need the books to get them there!
My class, on average, started the school year reading at a second grade level. That means that, on average, my students need to grow about three grade levels in reading this year to be successful in fifth grade. We have a lot of growing to do, and growing readers need lots of books! I have seen many, many students grow multiple grade levels in reading in one school year; it is absolutely possible to do. There are two major factors that enable this growth. The first one is students'ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ determination and focus on their goals. The second one is time spent reading books at their level. This is where you come in! My students need sets of leveled books that they can read independently so they can grow into the confident readers they know they can (and will!) be.
Your generosity will make it possible for my students to reach their reading goals this year.
They are excited and determined to read, but like any skill, it takes a lot of practice. Access to a wide variety of leveled books that they can read independently will help them become better readers, boost their self-confidence as they grow, and ultimately give them the skills to be successful on-grade or above-grade level readers.
