My students specialize in dreaming big. They know what their academic goals are and the hard work it will take to achieve those goals. They know that hard work and perseverance will lead them to be successful readers. They know that their teachers believe they can achieve their goals, goals which will ultimately lead them to college. What my students don't know is that they are already 2 to 3 years behind their peers in more affluent school districts. They don'€™t know that their school serves predominately low-income children, most of whom receive free or reduced lunch. They also are unaware that by not having access to quality books at home, they are already climbing a very steep ladder to success. As their teacher, I'm not worried about any of these challenges, because I know how determined they are to reach their goals. I know that their determination, not their life circumstances, will make them successful readers. Now they just need the books to get them there!
