My Students

My students are such caring individuals. They love to talk with each other and share their ideas. They surprise me every day with their willingness to participate in discussions. They grab onto meaningful topics with all of the maturity of people much older than they are. It makes my teacher heart so happy to watch them tackle things together and listen to/build off of each others' thinking. But unfortunately we are not a diverse community, 97.2% of the student population at Florence Rideout Elementary School identify as Caucasian. We do our best to learn all we can about the perspectives of people who may be different from us, but we have limited resources at the moment.

But they LOVE to be read to.

It's amazing to me how even my students who don't enjoy reading on their own, will be completely entranced when they are gathered on the rug for a read-aloud. This is why I know that I can reach them through picture books.

My Project

I know that I am not alone. There are teachers all across the country thinking about what they can do to help their students treat themselves and others with compassion. I believe one of the ways we can accomplish this is through books.

By donating to our project you will help my students identify with characters we read about, you will help them start seeing their classmates in ways that they never have before, and maybe you will help them realize what kind of impact their choices have on others.

I have chosen picture books that show important people in history overcoming their own hardships and reaching out to help others. There are diverse stories about people from other countries with influential hopes and dreams. Books about students who struggle in school, but ask for help and are not left behind. Books about being different and how it is perfectly okay. Ones that show students HOW to be kind, not just tell them to be. Books that help students realize how happy it makes them feel to watch characters stand up for others. Books that let them know they matter.

I will set aside time in my schedule to make sure we not only read one of these books daily, but also discuss what it means to us. We will determine the lesson and how it can be transferred to our own lives. We will think about the character and what kind of person they are. We will talk about specific parts in the book that we felt were most meaningful or that we related to the most. And sometimes we will write about our thoughts.

Thank you so much for taking the time to consider our project.
