I know that I am not alone. There are teachers all across the country thinking about what they can do to help their students treat themselves and others with compassion. I believe one of the ways we can accomplish this is through books. By donating to our project you will help my students identify with characters we read about, you will help them start seeing their classmates in ways that they never have before, and maybe you will help them realize what kind of impact their choices have on others. I have chosen picture books that show important people in history overcoming their own hardships and reaching out to help others. There are diverse stories about people from other countries with influential hopes and dreams. Books about students who struggle in school, but ask for help and are not left behind. Books about being different and how it is perfectly okay. Ones that show students HOW to be kind, not just tell them to be. Books that help students realize how happy it makes them feel to watch characters stand up for others. Books that let them know they matter. I will set aside time in my schedule to make sure we not only read one of these books daily, but also discuss what it means to us. We will determine the lesson and how it can be transferred to our own lives. We will think about the character and what kind of person they are. We will talk about specific parts in the book that we felt were most meaningful or that we related to the most. And sometimes we will write about our thoughts. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider our project.
