Our school is located in East New York and services the students and families of the local community. I work in a growing Title I school, with students from all backgrounds and many needs. My students not only bring with them a diverse background, but also, hardships, laughter, quirks, and intelligence.
Enter my classroom, or any classroom at my school and you can see students hard at work - improving their writing and reading, grappling with a math problem, or exploring a hypothesis.
But the truth is, school is not the hardest part of their day. I envision a classroom that is a safe place for learning, where students can learn from each other, collaborate, and find success. I believe that with the right resources, our classrooms can become that place for students.
My Project
Our 6th grade ELA classes have started a new curriculum and will be reading Ramayana: Divine Loophole by Sanjay Patel. It is a beautiful hardcover book with vibrant images to help our struggling readers enhance their understanding of the text and engagement in the lessons. Students need to travel back and forth with the book in order to successfully complete homework and read independently.
We want to ensure that each student across the grade has access to their own color copy of this book, Ramayana: Divine Loophole.
We currently have 2 class sets, but we need 1 more class set! Without these copies, students will not be exposed to the impact of the artwork and its connection to the themes presented in the book.
