Books for Brains: 6th grade Needs Novels

My Students

Our students are 6th graders at a 6-7-8 middle school. 6th grade was only added last year, so we are fairly new to the school site. The kids come from all socioeconomic groups and races, and they are creative and eager to learn.

These students want to read incredible literature that opens their minds and hearts.

Raising their reading levels is a major goal for our students, and exposure to good novels is invaluable. Reading proficiency is a skill set that affects all other subjects, and our students benefit from reading high quality literature.

My Project

Learning to read well is a fundamental goal of middle school. Middle school is a time when children begin to develop more sophisticated reading skills that allow them to analyze literature and master the content of the entire curriculum- social studies, math, and science.

With high quality literature, we can help students to develop their reading skills, improve comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary acquisition.

As a 6th grade team, we believe it is vital to expose kids to as much quality literature as possible. Teachers strive to create a book rich environment.

We are requesting help with funding for new class sets of novels (Wonder and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry). We currently have partial sets of each of the titles on our list, so we are trying to compile full class sets so we can have a book for every student. If they have their own copy, they can read at home and school. Teachers can expand their study of a novel and teach students how to analyze and understand how a story develops. The 6th grade team will share these class sets by rotating the titles between our pods. Our geeky teacher dream is that every 6th grader will have the opportunity to study several novels throughout the year.
