Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third grade students come from various diverse backgrounds, but all are similar in the fact that they are learning English. They are English Language Learners who are learning to read at a grade level most students are reading to learn. Five out of 25 students receive special education services, while three more are being tested for learning disabilities.
The majority of my reading class are boys, and they are boys who happen to struggle with learning to read.
I want to provide them with every opportunity to be successful, and above all else, to love learning to read. Not only is it difficult to begin to learn to read in third grade, but especially when the interest, language, and ability level vary greatly. I would love to provide my students with interesting books at their level, so they can feel a sense of pride in their learning.
My Project
The readers in my class have already spent much of their elementary years feeling unsuccessful in reading, and in learning for that matter. I would like to provide these books for both small group instruction, as well as accountable, independent reading time. The majority of books they are successful in are basal readers, which at this point can be embarrassing to a struggling third grade student. The books I have requested are not only high interest, but also will help them with their decoding and comprehension skills. I know they will learn to love to read, and won't have to be ashamed for reading books at their level. Once my student's begin to feel successful in reading, the sky is the limit!
