"They are all checked out." That is too often my response to the boys who ask for books about dirt bikes, Nascar, football, and soccer. I am a media specialist in a rural school library. We have about 60% free and reduced lunch at our school, and we did not make AYP this year. It is imperative that all students learn to love reading, especially nonfiction text.
The most requested type of books are cheer leading and dirt bikes. We have an adequate amount of cheer leading books, but it is so disheartening to tell the boys that all the dirt bike books are checked out. The couple, old dirt bike books that we have do not stay on the shelves. The boys actually want to read nonfiction, but because of lack of funds, we just do not have enough to offer them.
We are in desperate need of dirt bike books, as well as books about Nascar racing, football, and soccer. Having these resources will help satisfy the hunger my boys have for reading. It is so exciting to see the students rush to the nonfiction section of the library, but it is such a letdown to see how disappointed they are when the 629 section is out of dirt bike books, and the 796 section has no current football, soccer, or Nascar books.
You could help my boys and our school so much by supplying our nonfiction section with books that are interesting to boys and will keep them reading. You can do so much to make them lifelong learners and readers.
