This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bookworms is an after school book club that meets weekly in our high school. The students are the best part of Bookworms! They have grown so much in the last two years --from reading young adult books to reading adult books that address a range of topics like sexuality, racism and identity.

They are mostly students of color from low income families but they are rich in their creativity and imagination.

My students come from diverse backgrounds. They are from Egypt, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Honduras, Ecuador, Mexico and Guyana.

They love leading discussion, making predictions about the ending of the books and enjoy reading aloud. This year they requested that the club play a more active role in our school as well as to attend more field trips. Most of the students in book club are writers, and two of them are currently writing their books!

I admire them so much. They push me as a teacher and as a person to look at characters in a broader way. I have developed more empathy because of their analytical skills. This past year, four members of Bookworms had the highest GPA in school, and became Valedictorians and Salutatorians!

My Project

Bookworms is in its third year. The book club is open to all students and they can join twice during the school year. We have up to 15 students join and participate. These students self select to join the book club and stay between 2 to 3 hours after school to discuss books. We do activities that are inspired by the book and read aloud.

One of the special things about book club is that it helps students build their personal libraries.

Every book that they read in book club they get to keep and the books are NEW. Even though there are no more than 15 students in the book club it impacts over 200 students in school. Students in book club encourage other students to join and recommend books to them. I've seen book club students lend their books to other students. Other students also come to my office to borrow books because of the book club students encouraging them to seek books that we have read together in book club.

Because of budget cuts, our school won't be able to purchase books for the book club this school year. This year Bookworms Book Club will love to read more adult books and branch out from the typical young adult books that we have been reading. In the past we read, God Help The Child by Toni Morrison and The Mothers by Brit Bennett. This year we are going to read Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo, a Nigerian author and There There by Tommy Orange. It would be amazing to be able to have this book so we can continue our book club meetings.
