My students need 36 copies of the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks to improve literacy and provide them with rigorous content so they can be academically competitive.
Each period classroom is filled with thirty-six or more remarkable students who deserve every success in the world. Ensuring that they have the opportunities they deserve is my job as their teacher. The first step to ensuring they can accomplish their goals is to help improve their literacy.
Our High School is a rural school, located in Moundville, Alabama.
We are a seven through twelve school, which means that our students range in age from twelve years old to twenty years old. I truly teach the best students in the world. They have so much heart, and drive to be successful. I really do believe that they can do anything they set their minds to--provided they receive a quality education, developing within them the skills they need to be successful.
My Project
My students will partake in an intensive reading unit using the book the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This book is about biology, and will explain the contributions of a woman named Henrietta Lacks to science, providing my students with content knowledge while developing their literacy skills. As we read the book we will have classroom discussions about the text, work on writing summaries of the book, and discuss potential careers in the field of science. This will increase not only their literacy but also their writing and critical thinking skills, while providing them with information about potential pathways for their futures.
The donations for this project will provide my students with resources that they need to be successful.
It will help to make my students education more well rounded, and due to their growth in literacy they will be better able to reach their goals in life.
