My Students

My students are freshman in their ninth year of learning French. They have been immersed in the language since first grade, and as ninth graders, are preparing to take the AP French Language and Culture test at the end of the school year.

Having a classroom full of students fluent in a second language is an amazing opportunity, but it comes with some challenges.

My students cover a range of French ability from native speakers to students who struggle with the language on nearly every level. They have all been impacted by COVID-19 as online programs and immersion curriculum are difficult to impossible to replicate in an online learning environment. In spite of the challenges, they are resilient, determined and show great potential.

My Project

I have a classroom full of students who have been learning French for almost nine years. They have made tremendous progress, but an hour a day of class time is limiting. Students also miss class often because of COVID-19. I am working to build a library of French books to help my students learn in class and at home.

Reading is key to learning a language throughout the process, from beginner to bilingual.

I have spent the last five years working to build a classroom library of French books, but my budget is limited and French books are expensive. As I expand the classroom library, my French immersion students will have a greater variety of books to choose from to match their language level and their interests.

Students will be able to check books out from the classroom library to read at home. This will help build their vocabulary and fluency. It will also help them deepen their interest in French language and culture. During the uncertainty of COVID-19, books will allow them maintain a sense of continuity and connection to the class and the curriculum.
