An important aspect of learning a foreign language is discovering and appreciating cultural differences. In my classroom, I help students not only learn how to speak French, but how to understand and value cultural differences. Food is one of the most accessible and enjoyable aspects of a foreign culture. To help my students understand French culture, I incorporate a study of food--what people eat, how they see and value food, and how we can begin to understand their culture through food. These cooking supplies will allow us to create and experience food and cooking as the French do. Experiencing French food provides an entree into the French language and other aspects of French culture. I am asking for a Raclette machine, crepe makers and waffle makers to experience the food culture of Switzerland, France, and Belgium. We will use this equipment primarily as part of the classroom curriculum. We will also use it for extra-curricular cultural activities including a foreign language fair, French club, and activities for students' families.
