I am a first-grade teacher at a K-3 school in southern Maine. The school that I work at has a diverse community of learners with a wide range of financial security. Located in close proximity to a naval base, we have a large population of military families, so roster changes throughout the school year are frequent. Our school works hard to be a place where the needs of all students are met, and we are invested in helping children to be caring and well-rounded learners.
I love the energy and enthusiasm that each of my first graders brings to our classroom.
Along with that energy comes a unique personality and learning style. I work hard to get to know each of my students and to find different ways to help them do their best learning in my classroom each day.
My Project
My first graders are wonderful students and are very motivated to read. Nonetheless, some of my students are progressing more slowly with their reading skills. It's hard for them to see their peers moving on to more challenging texts, as they read books that are shorter and have fewer words. We book shop regularly in the classroom so that students have books in their bins that they can read independently. They choose books from bins that are at an appropriate reading level for them to read fluently, but some are stuck, and have been picking books from the same bins for awhile.
Help me motivate my beginning readers with some brand new books at levels that are appropriate for them!
All students want to feel a sense of belonging, and want to feel successful at school. My hope is that I will be able to encourage and motivate my beginning readers to keep working hard by providing them with some brand new books that will help them to build the reading skills that they need to master so that they can move on to more challenging texts.
