My Students
Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading and math materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite. Our school is a neighborhood school in a small New England city. There is a strong sense of community here between parents, staff, and residents that truly makes a difference in the school experience.
My Project
We know how important it is for a child to be exposed to books and reading from a young age. This exposure to books should start right from birth. We want to ensure that each family in our school with a new baby has access to great books to read to their babies!
When a child in my class welcomes a new sibling, it is important that we share the love of reading right from the start.
These new board books will be given to "big brothers and sisters" to bring home and read with their new babies at home.
