This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
This year, my school has been fortunate to be a welcoming school for many of the newcomers in Chicago. The students in my class are a sweet diverse group of children, who come to school ready to learn each day. Many of our newcomers came to us without prior school experiences or foundational literacy skills. However, I am consistently amazed at their resilience and their willingness to absorb everything we learn in our classroom. My newcomer students are always in search of reading materials that reflect who they are and allow them to understand who others are as well.
My students children crave experiences that allow them to better understand the world around them.
These books will allow my Spanish literate students to access reading materials that they can enjoy. Many of these books I have in English in my classroom as well, so this will allow my newcomer students to partner up with their peers and build relationships while also building confidence in their discussions with peers.
