Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

All kids should be able to open a book and see people who look like them. I teach in a low income school that is mostly minority students, African American and Mexican. My students love to look at the pictures in the books, but someone always says, they don't look like me. I want my students to identify with the people in the books.

I don't have a lot of books that focus on minority students. Shame on me, but I can't afford to purchase them at this time. Every time my students see a book with children of color their faces light up and they point to the people in the books.

I want my students to light up every time they open a book, not just some of the time. Students need to be able to identify with the characters in order to grasp the concept. More books featuring children of all cultures are truly needed in my library.

Make my library more appealing to my students by donating books that focus on their culture. This will encourage children to want to read more.
