Help me give my students books that relate to their personal identities and interests, as well as books that will stretch them to read in new formats and genres.
Next school year I am teaching in a brand-new classroom, with a brand-new group of students. I've taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for several years and will continue to do so next year, but I'll also be taking on a large number of Honors English classes. The Honors program at our school is an open-enrollment program, so any student who wishes to try out program may do so. Last year, my colleague who taught Honors reported that the students were a very diverse group. For example, some of the Honors English students were simultaneously enrolled in the ESL program! I also know from previous Honors teaching experience that some Honors students at our school do not enjoy reading or have as much time to do personal reading as much as one might assume; thus, I am determined to change that. This next school year will make the difference for them.
Our goal for the 2022-2023 school year will be for each student to read 35 books!
(We achieved an average of 27 books per student last year, so I KNOW we can do it!) The books I'm requesting here are mostly ones that my students for 2021-2022 had specifically requested. These books will provide also excellent "bridges" for students who are intimidated by new text types; they will be more ready to try something less-familiar out for a change. With your help (and pardon my shameless punning)...this will be a school year for the books!
