Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 29 wonderful 5th-grade students, which include special education students, magnet students, English Language Learners, and intervention students. They are very enthusiastic about learning and are always eager to explore new things. They love coming to school every day, and always have a big smile on their faces, despite the socioeconomic hardships they endure in the community in which they live. They attend a school in California, in a low-income neighborhood. The school is both a regular and highly gifted/magnet institution. However, my students are part of the regular school and do not have access to the materials and enrichment activities that the magnet students have.
My Project
At the beginning of each school year, I always ask my students what books they would like to read throughout the year and many of them said that they are interested in "The One and Only Ivan". That is why I am requesting 30 copies of the book to encourage them to read more. These books will be used when they are reading in small groups to help improve their comprehension and fluency skills. The students will also be allowed to take the books home to continue reading and share the story with their families. The teacher's guide and student workbook will be used to design lessons and activities that will help students to understand what they are reading. The book bins will be used to store the books after they have finished reading them.
When a child is interested in the story of a book, he/she is more willing to read it because it does not seem like a chore or something they have to do.
It becomes an activity that they enjoy and doesn't even realize that they are learning. When students select what they want to read, learning becomes more meaningful and fun.
Thank you in advance for considering donating to our project. Your support will make a huge difference in my classroom.
