Books Develop and Nourish Kids' Imaginations, Expanding Their World!
Help me give my students books at their reading level to help them develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies and to feel empowered!
First graders often come to school brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement for learning, life, friends, and interests. This is an age commonly marked by tremendous growth, lost teeth, great emotional highs and less frequently some lows. First graders make big plans, jump into projects with both feet, work at a fast pace and don't want to miss a thing.
Our classroom is a family!
Our school is located on a Native American Reservation. Most of my students have had significant trauma in their lives. I work very hard to create a classroom where the students feel safe and loved!
Books help students develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies - much more than other media. Books are interactive and they demand that kids think and use their imaginations. Putting books into a student's hands and reading them is empowering for the child.
My Project
Studies have shown that students are more motivated to read when they can freely choose their own reading material.
Students that are interested in what they are reading are likely to exert more effort, motivation, and engagement.
Having a choice is motivating because it gives student control. Independent reading with a choice of texts enables learners to take on more of an independent role in their literacy development.
I want to be able to have a classroom library full of books that are engaging and exciting for the students to read. To do this I need to have an assortment of books at each level so students can grab a book during independent reading time and read it independently or to a partner. This will foster a love of reading for each student!
As a first grade teacher, I have always felt it important to help my students establish a love of reading. During first grade, many students are learning to read for the first time and are very impressionable. These young students act just like sponges, they
are ready to soak up all the new learning that comes their way!
