This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Students: My students are eager to read but need books! We come from a low income area and low income students tend to be two grade levels behind their middle and upper class peers when it comes to reading. This gap begins in the early grades when students are first starting to read.

My class consists of twenty-seven first graders from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Many of my students are English language learners, coming from homes in which little English is spoken. Over 98% of the students in my school are considered to be living in poverty. Due to these adversities, they lack the resources to develop their reading skills at home. Each of these children, however, has a genuine desire to learn. Even with these challenges, my kids show up ready to learn, and wanting to succeed.

My Project

It is my job to ensure that my students can fulfill this yearning to learn. They love reading, but because of budget constraints, have very few options when it comes to choosing books to read at school. The district only affords us a few books per classroom, many of which tend to be very repetitive and boring.

A classroom library will enable my students to cultivate strong reading skills, leave first grade with a solid background in reading, and, consequently, have the ability to be successful in later years.

This collection of 15 different book sets will give them the means to defy the income achievement gap that plagues so many impoverished children. The sight word books, phones and word builders will help my kids learn and apply their developing phonics skills to their own reading success.
