My class consists of twenty-seven first graders from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are English language learners, coming from homes in which little English is spoken. Over 98% of the students in my school are considered to be living in poverty. Due to these adversities, they lack the resources to develop their reading skills at home. Each of these children, however, has a genuine desire to learn. Even with these challenges, my kids show up ready to learn, and wanting to succeed.
