Every year my students span a wide range of reading levels. This year the range is wider than usual, and there are more struggling readers than ever. In fact, several children in my class still read at a first grade level - when they read at all.
Students need to read on their own to maintain and build their reading skills.
And therein lies my challenge. I need to help them read, read as much as possible, and read often. To achieve this goal, I need to provide these students with books they can read and books they want to read. This material needs to be easy to read, easy to comprehend, yet exciting and fun.
Older students who struggle to read don’t want their peers to see them struggle; they need to maintain the appearance of success. Thus, their books should physically resemble those at higher levels, while being high-interest and at a low reading level. In order to maintain their current reading abilities, they need to read at least five books a week. To grow as readers, they need to read more.

My Project
By donating to Books: Bound for Success you will help buy good stories, exciting classics, revised to fit the reading ability of readers who struggle. Your money will also help supplement students' science knowledge with the easy-yet exciting science reader set. My students can read these books and therefore will read them. Learning that reading is a pleasure will encourage them to read more, which in turn will help them become more proficient readers.
Books like these Classic Starts collections and Science Readers are exciting and motivating and resemble age-appropriate books, inspiring children to read willingly and read more often.
