My Students

My students are a lovely group of preschoolers ranging in strengths, personalities, and interests. They are curious, fun-loving, and eager to learn about new things and the world around them. They also happen to have disabilities ranging from developmental delay to autism and orthopedic impairments. Despite the challenges that they face, my students come to school determined to learn and enjoy life. All of my students have the potential to do amazing things and positively impact the world around them!

My Project

My students and I live in Kailua-Kona, a rural town on the Big Island of Hawaii. Living in a rural area has its blessings and challenges. One of the main challenges is that we have limited access to books and libraries. This limited access is exacerbated due to the current pandemic.

Lack of access to books prevents my students from gaining language skills and participating in opportunities to develop a love of reading.

Books can be used as valuable learning tools in groups or to read to a student when they want to read on their free time. The books that are included in this project create opportunities for children from all walks of life and backgrounds to gain exposure to reading, learn more about the world, and have a wider variety of books to learn from and enjoy.
