It's almost Thanksgiving break and my kinder students and I have been having a wonderful time! Right now, we are working on reading old favorite storybooks as well as "learn about the world books", but soon I would like to start the students on reading books geared towards their independent reading level especially as the year goes on. I was a second grade teacher for the last few years and built up my library quite a bit. Unfortunately, almost all of my books are much too high for kindergartners so I'm starting from scratch again to provide them with books to read as they grow as readers.
If my project is funded, my kinders will be able to read and grow as readers through the use of books geared towards each of their independent reading levels.
This way, they will be able to work in class and at home on books that are meeting them where they are at in their reading journey and they won't be overwhelmed with books that are much too challenging for their current skills.
My Project
In our class, we have 26 students with so many different strengths and abilities. I want to be able to make sure that each one has a selection of books that are at their independent reading level to help them grow stronger in their reading skills. Independent reading encourages students to apply all of the skills they have been taught during our workshop time.
They become successful readers by practicing, and this gives them confidence and encourages them to read more.
These books will also foster their love for reading as they read exciting, entertaining stories that they enjoy. These books are leveled at a variety of levels appropriate for kindergarten students and gives them room to grow as the year progresses.
