Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are First Graders and they LOVE to read. If they're not reading the words in a book, they are using the pictures to create a story. Witnessing their love for reading is amazing, and I encourage that love to continue. Establishing an extensive classroom library will continue to foster my student's love for reading. We are located in a low income neighborhood; however, despite their challenges and distractions they come daily ready to learn and full of energy!

My Project

During literacy centers, my student have the opportunity to go the library center. In this center, students have the ability to ready ANY book of interest to them. They can sit on pillows, recline in chairs, or lay in the carpet and comfortably read! Giving them the autonomy of choosing their own book and own location to read, builds ownership and their intrinsic love to read. This practice of comfortably reading a book of interest, lends practice to how they can read at home. These diverse collections of books for our classroom library will allow my students to build their love for reading!
