We are a seaside community that has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our island town doesn't have a single home that was left undamaged. Many of my students homes are still uninhabitable almost nine months after the storm.
We thought that restarting school would add a sense of normalcy to the chaos that permeates our students' lives.
In some ways it has.
One of the things I've noticed since we've restarted is that our kids are dealing with more than we ever expected.
My Project
One of the most difficult tasks a teacher has is preparing her students for life. We teach them math, how to read and write, and how to throw a ball, but we miss the most important lessons of all- how to not only survive but thrive after school ends. This set of books is specific for this. The ink and easel pads will enable the class to print and do group projects together.
As a special project with my senior class, I want to go over these principles so that when they leave our school, they are not only prepared academically, but mentally and emotionally.
If this project helps only one child learn to deal with life's problems in a new way, it will be worth it.
