I have 22 5th grade students in a general education setting. Four of those students are in a 12:1:1 classroom for half of the day, and with me the other half. Four students receive AIS for ELA and four for math. As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district many of my students do not get many opportunities to experience life to the fullest. I am looking to provide my students with books that will open their minds and allow them to experience other places and people through reading.
My students love to be up and moving, love to explore books, and have a great love for learning.
For many of my students, schools is their safe place, somewhere they can be themselves, and are able to express themselves without judgment. I am hoping that when I provide them with books they are interested in, they will continue to read and it will help them continue on a path of excellence!
My Project
I chose to pick books for my project to fill my classroom library! I am a first year teacher and, unfortunately, do not have many books for my students to read. There are many times during the day that we have books in front of us. Whether it is silent reading, small group instruction, whole groups instruction, etc., books of all kinds and levels are being used! In order to keep my students engaged and to continue their growth, I need to provide them with new books that cover new content and interests.
My project will make a difference by providing my students with books that will interest them and will help them become stronger readers.
Sadly, my students are now running out of new books to read. Most of the books I have are lower level books that have been picked over and handed down for many years. Although I am grateful for the many donations of books I have received, I need to be able to provide books for my students that will help them continue to grow and succeed. I would like to provide many different leveled books for my students to be able to reach them all.
