My students need new interesting and cross curricular leveled books to fill their classroom library along with hands on learning stations, a writing center and listening center to help reinforce CCSS.
Help us make learning fun, my students are faced with so many challenges today that they are just ready to give up. With new rigorous standards and high stake standardized tests the kids are struggling to be on level with the rest of the country, and don't have the much needed support to succeed.
Our school is located in a high poverty area where most of my students live.
My students come from homes where education is just not a priority, it comes second to everything else. Education is not valued in their home, therefore it is not valued to them. Some of these students do not even have someone at home to help with homework and seeing a book at home is very rare. Those students who do have help at home face the challenge of not having the finances to buy books for the home or educational games because those things are not a necessity. I have students in the third grade who are still struggling with basic phonemic awareness and print concepts. I want to show them that their education is important to not just me but to others out there who don't even know them. My students need some encouragement to help them become successful in life and in school. My students are taught that no matter what struggles come their way, their education can help them push forward in life.
My Project
I am requesting a large amount of books to fill our classroom library. These books range from second grade level to fourth grade. These books are fiction and nonfiction so that my students can begin to enjoy reading nonfiction and understanding its purpose and complexity. I am also requesting several learning games and station supplies to try and help with creating a fun and engaging learning environment. I think that if they are having fun playing a literacy board game they will not realize how much they are learning. I also requested a listening center so that my students can begin to listen to various texts being read aloud fluently. Our school has lots of students who fall below the norm in reading comprehension and fluency, hopefully being able to hear others read fluently will help them to become fluent readers.
Please help my classroom become a haven for learning fun.
I want my students to be eager to come to school and eager to learn new things. I want them to realize that learning can be fun and that it is a lifelong process that makes life more enjoyable. I think that having these new books, games, and listening center will open their eyes to the generosity of the world. It will show them that there are people out there that care deeply about their education even if they have never met them.
