Our school is located in a high poverty area where most of my students live. My students come from homes where education is just not a priority, it comes second to everything else. Education is not valued in their home, therefore it is not valued to them. Some of these students do not even have someone at home to help with homework and seeing a book at home is very rare. Those students who do have help at home face the challenge of not having the finances to buy books for the home or educational games because those things are not a necessity. I have students in the third grade who are still struggling with basic phonemic awareness and print concepts. I want to show them that their education is important to not just me but to others out there who don't even know them. My students need some encouragement to help them become successful in life and in school. My students are taught that no matter what struggles come their way, their education can help them push forward in life.
