Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach ninth grade English at Richmond High School in Richmond, California. This school is incredibly low income (78% free and reduced price lunch) but I have been impressed by my students desire to learn! My ninth graders come from unsafe, gang infested communities. Yet, they show up to school everyday ready to learn and have a desire to better their lives and their situations. I have gotten together with the other ninth grade teachers to try to create a relevant and challenging curriculum for our students. Unfortunately, the school is not able to provide us with enough books for our students to each use and take home to do their homework. We simply can not do all of the reading in class, so as teachers, we have been forced to photocopy entire novels for our students to read! I would love to receive copies of the book "Always Running" by Luis Rodriguez. I want to use it to teach my students how to analyze literature. They will learn how to recognize figurative language and much more through this novel. I will then ask them to write an essay that compares Luis' experiences in the novel to their own experiences in their neighborhood. To do this, I want each student to have their own copy of the novel! Students in low income communities are often given texts that are old, photo-copied, and in no way relevant to their life experience. I want to teach my students that writing and reading will empower them. To do this, I need help bringing them texts that my school does not have the resources to provide. This project will help them read, write, and understand the power of literature!
