Kindergarten students first come to school with a dramatic range of abilities. Some are beginning to read and some are beginning to tie their shoes. Some are beginning to open a milk carton and some are beginning to zip a coat. All of my students want to be happy and to learn.
The district is in a rural area, and our students aren't afraid to jump off of tires on the playground or introduce themselves to visitors or older students.
I am in awe of their confidence and strength. They often help take care of siblings, even at this young age, and did not attend preschool. Some are interacting with new peers for the first time. One thing all of my students share is love for a good story. I want to provide read-alouds targeted to the things we are learning like social skills, school event related topics, and social studies.
The books in this project cover a range of topics through stories about important people doing important things, stories about how we get along, and how we feel. These books will target the things we are learning in a fun, engaging way. Books are the way to hook all students.
It is so important for children to be surrounded by and read to from quality books.
Literacy is all about a love of stories. With these books, I can introduce so many different concepts. This is one way to make a big difference in reaching students through printed words and imagination.
