My students need 57 high interest books at a range of reading levels to foster a love for reading; this love can help them reach their 2 year reading growth goals.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Two years of reading growth is a goal that must be met for most of my students to finish middle school reading on grade level. The reading gap tends to only grow year after year once students leave elementary school. To prevent this, they must be hooked on reading.
My humanities students enter the 6th grade reading on an average 3rd or 4th grade reading level.
Reading science, math, and history texts is difficult. Aside from this great impediment to the comprehension necessary for learning to come alive in school, my students are walking in scared of middle school. Transitions to middle school are difficult for everyone, but in addition to the expected fears and nervousness, my kids are pushed into an environment lacking the order and discipline needed for schooling: daily fights and chaotic hallways. To offer my students a chance to escape into new worlds through reading, while simultaneously helping them make 2 years of progress, is my goal with this project.
My Project
In order for students to do the amount of reading they need to grow 2 years, my kids will need to LOVE reading. We love reading when we're moved, shocked, inspired. Unfortunately, these are exactly the types of books my library lacks. My DonorsChoose book wish list is a reflection of the hopes, interests, loves, troubles, passions of my students. I want a classroom library that allows for a perfect book match for each student, a match that then spirals into a genuine interest in reading. The books range in grade levels from 2nd to 7th, to ensure that my low-level readers have high-interest books that can push them along the path of reading growth. Another deficit in my current library is male main characters, making it difficult for many of my boys to be drawn into books. This book wish list includes many boy-driven novels, as well as a large collection of graphic novels that will spur their interest. With such a variety of books on the shelves, I know my students can grow.
Literacy is important.
Giving my students a chance to love reading, means giving them a chance to access the world of words. My students need to be equipped with the literacy required of them to function in this society, but more importantly discover a never-ending desire to learn, which can only be offered with the tools of reading.
