My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges in school and outside of school. Many are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Despite this, they still come to the classroom often with a smile, eagerly anticipating, "What are we drawing today?"

The students I work with are direct, active, require positive encouragement, clever, and genuinely want to succeed.

I want my kids to feel welcomed, noticed, validated and celebrated when they come into my classroom, regardless of their interest in art or what their life outside of school looks like.

My Project

My students are obsessed with checking out books from the art room.

It is such a wonderful problem: my kids want more books!

We have been fortunate to have kind-hearted heroes donate to our classroom and have developed a decent-sized library of not only art books but also wonderfully illustrated books. I am having to find new ways to say the same thing: HWLES students have developed a great appetite for books. Many of the students are reading below grade level, which can make reading and books intimidating. I have students who ask for books to take home to teach themselves as well as students who ask to borrow books that they want to copy at home. Please help me provide books for my super smart artists.
