My heritage Spanish class is full of diverse learners. They all come from homes where Spanish is spoken to varying degrees and they range from developing language skills to fully fluent verbally. My students are learning to read, write, and express themselves using academic Spanish.
My students are engaged, talkative, and perceptive learners in Spanish.
They love to share their knowledge and insight with each other by engaging in discussions about what they are learning. They want to further their Spanish so that they can be fully bilingual and biliterate. The goal is to graduate high school with a bilingual certificate!
My Project
These Spanish books will enhance students' reading experiences in the classroom. Cajas de carton will be a novel that we read and discuss whole class. This powerful, thought-provoking memoir about the migrant workers' lives in the mid 1900s will open up many venues for discussion. Students will be engaged in listening, reading, writing, and speaking while working through this novel. While students are working on a whole class novel, they will also be participating in free voluntary reading.
These new books will be building my classroom library with compelling stories that students will get lost in.
Choice is very important for student engagement so I want to be able to offer my students of variety of genres, reading levels, and themes for their book selection. There are varying levels of Spanish proficiency in my classes so I would like to have many books for students to choose from. I want to foster the love for reading no matter what language they read in!
