Help me give my students the love for reading at their instructional level!!
I teach a classroom of fourth-graders that are special education students. All of my students are on IEPs (individualized education plan) and require classroom and testing accommodations. All of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. We are in an urban setting where 85% of our children are economically disadvantaged and, therefore, all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, as many of them do not have enough to eat at home. Unfortunately, my students don’t have money for school supplies.
Some see the disabilities, but special education teachers see the possibilities.
As coming into my second year as a teacher, I have learned so many amazing things but also realized I need a lot of things to help my students be successful. My students love coming to school. I strive to create a family environment within my classroom, where students are provided a quality education. They love having new experiences and participating in lessons and activities. I want my students to know how much I care, value, and supported they are with me!
In my class, my students aren't that excited about reading. I need to try to make reading a habit for my children, by sparking the pleasure and excitement, that one gets when they find that book that they don't want to put down, or that they hate to see come to an end.
My students have special needs and reading is a big struggle for them.
I was hoping that if I could get some more books that they enjoyed, they would start to like to read and they would just do it independently. In my library, I really don't have much of a variety for my kids. My students need lower-level books as we have all different levels in my classroom.
