My classroom is a diverse mix of third graders who are readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, problem solvers, and innovative thinkers. They love to learn in the loving structured environment we have created together.
Our school is a Title I school in rural North Carolina.
It is made up of many different ethnic backgrounds, races, and cultures. We serve a high number of English Language Learners, as almost half of our student population is Hispanic. Many of these students live in households that speak little to no English. Our students often qualify for free/reduced lunch due to their family’s socioeconomic status. Many of these students lack support at home and come to school unprepared. It means the world to me that I get to be the difference maker in the lives of the children I have the privilege to teach!
My Project
In order to be successful when learning our reading standards, students need to have mentor texts that show quality examples of what we are learning. These mentor texts will be utilized by the teacher to model various reading strategies and skills during a whole group mini lesson. Upon the completion of this mini lesson students will be invited to practice the strategy or skill during independent reading time. Mentor texts used from previous lessons and the current lesson will also be available for students to go back and utilize or read during independent reading time.
It is essential for students to have high quality texts at their finger tips when learning new reading strategies and skills.
With the mentor texts from this project I will be able to provide my students with 6 weeks of literacy instruction that is critical for third grade students to master.
Thank you for supporting my students and I as we develop our love of reading and hone in on new third grade reading skill/strategies!
