This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
How do you turn 30 third graders, who have always considered themselves "bad at reading," into readers? You provide them with high-interest, engaging books!
My sole reason for being a teacher is to ensure every student I come into contact with believes they can achieve any goal they put their mind to despite whatever foundation they have.
My students come from a small, tight-knit community school where we do not have much due to our size. I work with an amazing group of coworkers and even more amazing students who do all we can to ensure each individual student is getting the quality, differentiated education they deserve.
My Project
Our Title I, community school is in its third year of trying to reach accreditation status in reading. Our classroom jumped into a "new way" of teaching reading that involved less reading to answer test-like questions, and more reading for the pure enjoyment of reading. We almost completely eliminated weekly passages and comprehension questions, and replaced this activity with more time to read!
This has helped us improve in a big way, as we are expected to be fully accredited at the end of this school year!
This year my students have truly developed as readers and I credit this to the hundreds I have poured into our classroom library. My students have officially turned into readers, a title many of them would have never dreamed of giving themselves! Students who excel at reading become more successful in life. Contributing to my classroom library will put my students on the path to success.
