Books as Mirrors & Windows #ISeeMe

Help me give my students picture books that act as mirrors and windows -- books that reflect their identities and experiences, as well as books that reflect different identities and experiences outside of themselves.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are empathetic, driven, and critical to analyze the world around them. Developmentally, students are ready to start asking tough questions that even adults struggle with; seeking out answers be it through teachers, classroom materials, or their own research.

The best part about 4th and 5th grade is that students are proud to share their strong opinions, and quick to stand up for a friend or community in need.

Whether it's detecting bias in a text, or standing in solidarity with a national protest, students are actively engaged in their surroundings.

My Project

Reading is an essential part of our day. Whether students are reading independently, in partners or book clubs, or listening to a whole class read aloud, we spend a substantial part of our time together with books. However, in a self-contained Special Education classroom, students often come to school with negative attitudes towards reading, something that feels almost insurmountable to them. This becomes a huge obstacle as students become older, yet, due to gaps in their foundational reading skills, are both unengaged in reading as well as unable to enjoy high interest or grade level texts. Kids need access to books that are not only accessible and engaging, but books with which they can connect.

Books that reflect the identities and experiences of children work to empower students and provide increased confidence and a positive self-image.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to provide books that children are able to deeply connect to, but also positive literacy experiences that will foster positive reading habits, and therefore improved literacy skills.
