My Students
The students at our school are third through fifth graders who come to class every day ready to learn and do their best. They receive instruction in English and/or Spanish Dual Language Immersion settings.
Students in the school come from diverse cultural, linguistic, racial, ethnic, ability, socioeconomic, gender, religious, immigration and family backgrounds.
Approximately 14% of students are African American, 11% are Asian, 8% are Multiracial, 37% are Hispanic/Latino and 29% are White. While the students are aware of how diverse our community is, they have limited access to culturally relevant literature.
My Project
As teachers, we are looking for authentic and diverse literature about a range of social justice issues, including: families; race; ethnicity; language; immigration; socioeconomic status; ability; gender; gender identity; sexual orientation; and religion.
Social justice issues are often seen as too complex for children and thus avoided in discussions with elementary students; these books will allow our students to have child-friendly discussions about diverse topics surrounding equity.
After creating grade level book sets, the books will be used to support our school's monthly equity themes through read-alouds and lessons. These diverse books will help all our students make connections with literature and their own lives. Students will later have individual access to these same books in classroom libraries. This will help them feel safe, welcomed, and validated as learners and individuals.
