Books and Supplies for Venezuelan Children

My students need basic supplies and a variety of Spanish language materials, including crayons, color pencils, blank CD-Rs, Spanish/English Vocabulary Puzzles and a Spanish All About Today Activity Center.

We are a charter school located in Chicago. Our "O" Ambassador Club is made up of 8th graders in one section and 3rd & 4th graders in another section. The 8th graders will be the ones who participate in this project.

The 8th grade students from our "O" Ambassador Club are studying and participating in global awareness projects. They have decided they want to visit Venezuela, South America and take books and school supplies to the Barlovento Region of Venezuela in June 2009. They need Spanish Language Books and supplies to take as they journey to South America. They also need dollars to buy the extra suitcases to take the books, as well as the fees for the extra baggage.

The students have been studying the aspects of the "O" Ambassador Club: poverty, education, health and sustainable development. This Spanish Language Book collection helps them address the goal of education. My students will study some Spanish using these and other materials before they travel to Venezuela. They will work with the young Venezuelan children on projects using the supplies from this donation. In addition, they wish to take blank CD's to donate to the Juan Pablo School. They will practice the Spanish they learned by helping the little children identify objects and associate with the Spanish word. From this experience students will gain a first knowledge and an appreciation for a foreign language and beliefs, customs and values of another country.

Our school emphasizes global awareness and service. Your generous donation will make it possible for my students to directly contribute to the educational advancement of young Venezuelan children in the Barlovento region of Venezuela, thus fulfilling one of the major goals of the "O"Ambassador Club which is education.
