My students need books, adaptive equipment such as scissors and crayon rings, as well as felt boards and other visuals to help them make connections to class content.

My Students
Upon entering middle school, books tend to lose their pictures. This can be difficult for students, with or without disabilities, who greatly benefit from visuals to aid in comprehension.
My students are 6th through 8th graders who have moderate to severe disabilities, including Autism, Down's Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other physical and intellectual disabilities.
Our school is inclusive, and students attend a mix of general education and special education classes based on their individual needs. As our students are at lower reading and math levels than their peers, it is important to have supplemental materials to support them.
My Project
The books being requested for my classroom will give the students the opportunity to read stories with lots of visuals that are appropriate for their grade level, such as the biographies of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Amelia Earhart. Several of the books emphasize math concepts of everyday life. In this project, I have requested items and manipulatives to aid in reading comprehension of the books, such as a felt board where you can make characters and settings, and a scale to teach weight and comparisons. Items such as the adaptive scissors and crayon rings will allow students with physical disabilities to participate in activities with their non-disabled peers. Materials such as these will help students with diverse needs to succeed in various learning environments.
These donations will help students with differentiated needs to better participate in an array of school and classroom activities, giving them a stronger sense of community and more opportunities to contribute and participate alongside their peers.
