I am a third grade teacher at an Equity Plus School. All 12 of my third grade students are receiving free (11) or reduced lunch (1). Our school as a whole has at least 95% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. The majority of my students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and broken homes where life is happening too fast, and an education is not always the first priority. My students do not have the necessary tools to enrich their lives at home. By necessary tools I mean books. I teach my students that books can take them places they\'ve never heard of but always dreamed about. Books can be a hide-a-way when things get rough. I cannot take away any of the things they experience when they leave my room; however, I can supply them with everything they need at school to ease their minds and give them the ability to be children rather than adult decision makers. I am asking for a set of books for our classroom library. I have chosen 6 book bundles (a total of 62 books) from AKJ Educational Supplies. These books are on various levels - like my students - and are on topics such as mysteries, fairy tales, and the Underground Railroad, in which they have expressed interest throughout the year. I want my students to be able to find the courage and enthusiasm needed to become successful learners in our classroom, which will in turn help them become productive and successful members of the community. They need positive images and optimistic ideas to set them on the right path. This library will help them get started.
